The fourth edition of the conference series, which is organized annually by Turkish Ceramic Art Education and Exchange, was held at Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Fine Arts, between October 11-13, 2017. Having the theme “Ceramics and Architecture”, the conference’s main objective was to tackle this theme in the context of ceramic materials in architecture from past to present in this ever-changing and developing world, both in terms of their contributions and relations established between the notion of space, by evaluating them through a versatile manner in terms of historical, technological and terminological aspects.
The 4th Ceramic Art Education Conference started when Prof. Zehra Çobanlı and Prof. Sevim Çizem addressed their speeches and presented a “Lifetime Achievement Certificate” to artist Bingül Başarır. Dear Cengiz Bektaş, one of our highly-esteemed architects, made an opening speech entitled “Architecture-Ceramics” in the conference consisting of 4 sessions. Giving place to speeches by the Artist Ferenc Halmos, Asst. Prof. Bülben Yazıcı, Assoc. Prof. Lerzan Özer, Asst. Prof. Zafer Derin, the Artist Nikos Liaros, Asst. Prof. Hüseyin Özçelik, Prof. Mustafa Ağatekin, Asst. Prof. Candan Güngör and Asst. Prof. Mehmet Kahyaoğlu; the conference’s final session was consisted of alumni profile. In this session, Ayfer Kalsın, one of the graduates of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Department of Ceramics; Saliha Kartal and Bora Çetin, graduates of Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Ceramic and Glass Design
Department; have shared their educations’ contributions to their working
lives and their postgraduate experiences, and they further presented some
of their works.
The conference also gave place to several exhibitions and workshops. Having the theme “The Name is Blue”, a Juried Ceramic Exhibition, the Poster Presentation Exhibition of Graduation Projects and an “İzmir” themed ceramic trinket competition and competition exhibition, aiming at undergraduate and graduate students, were all held in the frame of the event. The “İzmir” themed Ceramic Trinket Competition Exhibition and awards ceremony was held on October 12, at the Art Gallery of Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Fine Arts. In the competition, Samet Can Alış, Doğukan Demir, Kadriye Gayin, Hasan Basri İnan and Emre Aydos were deemed worthy of awards. The same gallery also gave place to the poster presentation exhibition of graduation projects, which was attended by students from various universities of Turkey. As for the Juried Ceramic Exhibition, with the theme entitled “The Name is Blue”, it was held on October 13 at İzmir Art and Sculpture Museum. The event ended after the following activities: “Paper Kiln Workshop” by Prof. Kaan Canduran, “Mud Sculpture Workshop” by Onur Fındık, “Copper Reduction Workshop” by Assoc. Prof. Seyhan Yılmaz and Asst. Prof. Müjde Gökbel, “Lathe Workshop” by Hanieh Mouhebati and “Fiber Reinforced Clays-Architectural Ceramics” by Ferenc Halmos. Bringing artists, academicians and students together, the event came to an end with the renunciative contributions of Prof. Zehra Çobanlı, the President of Turkish Ceramic Art Education and Exchange Association and the administrative board of the association; Prof. Sevim Çizer, the Head of Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Ceramic and Glass Design Department and its instructors.
